15 Reasons Serena Williams Is The Most Badass Tennis Player
Serena Williams is without a doubt one of the greatest athletes in the world. She has been a professional tennis player for half her life turning pro in 1995. She has set and broken so many records over the years. She is continuing her dominance in the sport this year as she recently won at Wimbledon. Serena is someone the media loves to focus on, whether its for her playing, her body, or other things that may not pertain to tennis. Serena seems to play by her own rules and that seems to be working for her. This makes her one of the most badass athletes of our generation.
She is Gracious At the age of 19 the entire crowd at Indian Wells booed Serena Williams for what many viewed as racially motivated reasons. She boycotted the tournament for 14 years. She recently decided to forgive and “move on”, which is a testament to her character. Although she had to pull out of the tournament early due to an injury, she told the crowd, “I’m so excited to have been able to come out here and to start to build so many wonderful new memories, and I can only promise to come back next year and play right here on this court in front of you guys.”
Stands By Her Religious Beliefs
Serena was raised as a Jehovah Witness. Her and her family still remain with the faith til this day. Jehovah Witness’ shy away from competitive sports because they feel it breeds nationalism and vanity. Serena Williams has been ridiculed and looked down upon by fellow Witness’ for her participation in the Olympics and other sports tournaments. She still is a devoted Jehovah’s Witness despite the internal chastisement and external ridicule of her faith.
Came Back From A Health Scare In 2011, after a serious foot injury, Serena was hospitalized in the intensive care unit for multiple blood clots in her lungs. Not even that could stop Serena from playing the game she loves. She had this to say about her return to the court. “I realized that I’m really fortunate to be alive and to be playing, and that it’s not the end of the world if I don’t win. I was able to relax. It was the first time I’ve ever had so much fun on the court. I would play matches and enjoy myself. That brought a whole new perspective to my game. Now I know I don’t have to play again if I don’t want to. I play because I love it.”
Dances to Beyonce Often times you see tennis players sitting on the side with their headphones on. This is a way for them to get into their zone and tune out everything around them. You can’t help but wonder what each player likes to listen to. We know now that Serena listens to Beyonce. You won’t see too many tennis players dancing to Beyonce on and off the court and make a video of it.
Confident In Her Ability There is a certain level of confidence that Serena exudes and it is completely badass. At 33, Serena has been playing professionally for half her life, and as the No.1 ranked player she is considered by many to be the greatest athlete in the world. She’s confident enough to embrace it. “Victory is very, very sweet. It tastes better than any dessert you’ve ever had.”
Family Orientated Serena is very family orientated. Her father is the reason why her and her sister are professional tennis players now. She is very caring a protective of her sister. During the fourth round of Wimbledon this year, Serena beat her sister Venus in two rounds. Upon her win, there was no celebration, just a slow walk to the net where the two met and embraced each other and walked off the court together. She later told reporters “It’s hard to feel excited about (beating) someone you root for all the time no matter what and who you love so much and she’s your best friend in the world.”
She Dated Drake and Common To be so focused on becoming the best tennis player in the world means there is little to no time for anything else. Especially a love life. Some how Serena was able to balance the two. She has dated rappers Common and Drake. She was even a part of the reason the two had a feud with each other. Having two high profile rappers lyrically fighting it out over her means she is a pretty badass woman. Drake was even at her Wimbledon victory match that just happened.
Proud Of Body Image Serena has always been a point of attention when it comes to body image. When it comes to the female body, image is a big deal and many people have there own opinion on what a woman should look like. Whatever the opinion, Serena does not care. It has been said that her physique is much like a man’s and that it is unattractive. Serena turns heads every time she steps out. Whether she is in playing gear or a evening gown she makes a statement. Many people wish they were half as fit as she is.
First Woman Since ’88 to Win the First Three Legs of the Grand Slam Winning the Australian, French and Wimbledon had only been done twice before by Margaret Court in 1970 and Steffi Graf in 1988. Each time, both women went on to win the Grand Slam. Serene is now the third woman to win the first three legs of the a Grand Slam. Serena has a lot of Grand Slams under her belt already but this run is pushing her to have the best major tennis season in the history of the sport. She has one more tournament, the US Open to dominate before claiming another Grand Slam.
Serena Is 20-4 In Grand Slam Finals. Speaking of Grand Slams. Serena has a total of 20 grand slam wins and has played in 24 grand slam finals. That makes her Grand Slam record an outstanding 20-4. That’s an insane winning percentage of 83%. It is really badass to win that much. She is cruising to her 21st grand slam title in September. The odds seem to be in her favor.
She Has Never Been Beaten Twice By Someone Not Related To Her Serena’s Wimbledon record is now 73-10. That’s one more win than the Chicago Bull’s 1995-96 record. Serena’s 10 losses are to nine different women. The only person of that 10 to beat her twice is her sister Venus. Serena has experienced a lost in every round at Wimbledon, with the exception of the first round. Of the 10 losses, six have come to players ranked worse than her, though not necessarily seeded worse. For instance, Serena was ranked No. 25 when she lost to No. 9 Marion Bartoli in 2011.

Currently she is back in the number one spot and has been there for quite some time now. If she can remain in the number one spot for another year she will have the record for most consecutive weeks at number one. Steffi Graf is the current leader with 186 weeks. It’s hard to imagine anyone coming up and dethroning Serena, but in the world of sports anything can happen. Still, I would bet Serena gets that record too.
Serena Was Once Ranked No. 1 In Singles And Doubles At The Same Time. It is an amazing feat to be number one in two events in one sport in the same year. It came during nine glorious weeks in the summer of 2010. Serena and Venus were playing in the doubles together and won Wimbledon in 2009 through the French Open 2010. Only seven women have done that before, just two with longer streaks than Serena’s nine weeks.
Last Person to Pull French Open and Wimbledon Double The different types of courts makes winning back-to-back majors a difficult accomplishment. While the Aussie-French double is tough, so is French-Wimbledon. The French Open is played in clay and Wimbledon is a grass court. The transition from the two takes a toll on players. Serena did it in her first prime, back in 2002, a win which was part of her “Serena Slam.” Here latest was this French Open-Wimbledon Double cam this year.
