15 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Ronda Rousey

By  |

It seems like not so long ago, none of us had even heard of Ronda Rousey. But in just a few short years she has become perhaps the most successful female fighter in history. She is undoubtedly the biggest star in MMA (men included) and she completely dominates every opponent that is dumb or crazy enough to step into the octagon with her. Not only that, she has already successfully crossed over into the world of entertainment, having appeared in several films and television shows. But there is plenty about this stunning athlete that we bet you don’t know, like these 15 things:

She Once Got a Raisinet Stuck Up Her Nose

We can imagine that being in the line of work Ronda is, she is no stranger when it comes to making visits to the ER, but did you know that her very first trip there was when she was little and got a Raisinet stuck up her nose? Apparently Ronda and her older sister were having fun one day when they were little kids putting candy up their noses. The Raisinet never came out and so off they went with their mom to the ER. Story goes when they pulled into the parking lot of the nearest ER, the candy magically popped out of her nose.

She Can’t Stand Paper Cuts

It’s fairly obvious that Ronda experiences more pain in one single fight than most of us ever will and she seems to handle it like a real tough lady. But supposedly there is one pain in the world that she can’t handle – and that is a paper cut. She actually even feels uneasy just talking about paper cuts. She once said, “Yeah. Ugh, I got a paper cut the other day, and I had chills for, like, an hour. I hate paper cuts. Talking about it right now makes me uneasy.”

She wanted to be a Marine Biologist

Cool, I can officially say Ronda and I have something in common now, and Lord knows it’s not our abs. Her first career goal was to become a marine biologist because she always had a love of animals and fascination for sea life. She was also a good little artists and painted a full mural in her childhood bedroom that features kelp, a sea lion and random fish.

The Late Rowdy Roddy Piper Approved Her Nickname

If you know anything about Ronda you probably know she is a huge wrestling fan. One of her heroes growing up was the WWE’s late, great Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper. Ronda’s friends gave her the nickname “Rowdy” but she chose not to use it because she thought it might be disrespectful to her idol. But then one day she actually met Rowdy and he approved of her using that nickname. Cool.

She Worked at a Gym

At one point Ronda found herself with little direction in life and in need of a job, so she began working the graveyard shift at a 24 Hour Fitness in California. This was actually a difficult time for Ronda because she was trying to figure out what she should be doing with her life. She soon realized she needed to get back into fighting and quit her gym job to take up fighting in the MMA.

She’s Big into Gaming

What does Ronda like to do after she is done with one of her big fights? According to her sister, she likes to do nothing but lie on her couch for two weeks and play video games. During those two weeks she can generally be found playing World of War Craft and Mario Kart. And her family claims she has some mad Just Dance skills.

Her Mother Refuses to Learn Her Boyfriends’ Names

So Ronda’s mom, AnnMaria De Mars, who was herself a 1984 world judo champion, calls all of Ronda’s boyfriends Bob. She feels what’s the point of learning a guy’s name if he isn’t going to be sticking around. Ronda’s mom even assigns numbers to keep the guys straight. Ronda’s last boyfriend was Bob 6. As soon as Ronda gets married, that is when she will call the guy by his real name.

She is Very Open about Her Pre-Fight Ritual

Ronda once gave an interview with Maxim where she explained that a woman should have sex before getting into a fight. She said, “It’s just a medical fact: As a girl, if you have sex before a fight, it raises your testosterone. People are fascinated by it because that is one difference between men and women. You know, the guys really have to abstain, and the girls are kind of medically encouraged to do the opposite. If it’s available to me, then I’m all for it, but otherwise I’m kind of out of luck.” I would imagine there are guys lining up who would be more than happy to oblige your pre-fight ritual.

She Almost Died During Birth

Ronda was one of those babies who have the umbilical cord wrapped around their neck and so she was deprived of oxygen for a time. As a result, she didn’t speak until the age of six and even then, she needed speech therapy to speak properly. The good news is, Ronda was a fighter even back then and fought to stay alive.

She Gets Two-Week-itis Real Real Bad

As scary as Ronda is inside of the cage, she’s apparently much scarier outside two weeks out from a fight. It’s when she gets what her family calls “two-week-itis.” During this time those that know her say you don’t even want to make eye contact with her. She’s hungry because she’s started cutting weight and she’s training hard so she’s just tired and cranky.

She Wins Very Quickly

You may know that Ronda’s fights don’t last too long, but did you know that she has won her last three fights in 96 seconds? Total! Fights in her career have only gone to the third round once in fact, that’s how quickly she dominates all of her opponents. So, if you haven’t watched one of her fights and want to – be sure to tune in on time or you’re likely to miss it.

She Loves Pokemon

Ronda is nuts for all-things Pokemon. She once introduced herself on the social media site Reddit by writing, “Ronda here. My favorite Pokemon is Mew and I used to moderate a Pokemon forum.” And, when she was asked the incredibly important question “Would you rather fight 100 Mewtwo sized Mews or 1 Mew sized Mewtwo?,” she chose wisely and said the one Mew sized Mewtwo.

She Has a Love Hate Relationship with Buffalo

When asked in an interview once which historical figure she’d most want to fight she said William Frederick Cody aka Buffalo Bill. “Him destroying the buffalo population of America also destroyed the Native American culture and coming from Jamestown ND, which boasts having the largest statue of a buffalo in the world, the plight of the buffalo is quite near and dear to my heart.” she said. So, she kinda hates that Buffalo. But Buffalo wings? She could easily devour 60 wings in one sitting she claims.

She Won an Olympic Medal

Not many know that before Ronda got into the world of MMA, she followed her mother’s footsteps and became very disciplined in judo. She became a judo champion and actually won a bronze medal in the Beijing summer Olympics. It was when she returned home from these games that she found herself working the graveyard shift at the gym in California.

She is Passionate about Body Image

Ronda has said, “As many of you already know, I get a lot of questions about femininity and body image. Women are constantly being made to feel the need to conform to an almost unattainable standard of what’s considered attractive so they can support a multitude of industries buying shit in the pursuit of reaching this standard.”

Well f-ing said!

She Can Take Floyd Mayweather

Ronda has no doubts that she could take Floyd Mayweather, not in a boxing match, but in a legitimate fight. Ronda said in her recent AMA: “Floyd is one of the best boxers of all time. He would definitely beat me in a boxing match. I unfortunately don’t get into ‘matches’. I fight for a living. In a no rules fight, I believe I can beat anyone on this planet.”
